Star Trek Beyond marks the 13th movie in the Star Trek franchise. A franchise that started as a TV show back in 1966. With the 13 movies and 5 total TV shows, this is one of the longest running franchises in film history! This is not counting a animated TV series, fan films and comic books that have a long running history as well. This September marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, and with one of the biggest fan bases of any movie franchise, Beyond couldn’t have come at a better time. Some Star Wars fans might argue that fact, and with good cause, for Star Wars has a strong following as well. But as the creator of Star Wars said himself, “Star Wars stood on the shoulders of Star Trek”… So without any further ado, lets talk about Star Trek Beyond!

To start things off we get the entire cast back at the helm of the USS Enterprise! Pictured above is the trinity of this crew and the core of the Federation Star Fleet. Chris Pine (Captain James T. Kirk), Karl Urban (Doctor ‘Bones’ McCoy) and Zachary Quinto (Commander Spock) all do so well together. The chemistry between the three is something wonderful and its what makes these films so special. Along with the rest of the cast who all do so well playing off each other the film really goes “Beyond” in this aspect. It will make you invested in each character who all get a nice amount of screen time and moments to shine. Director Justin Lin really did a good job weaving each character into the story.

When you come to care about these characters it really becomes a great emotional adventure as they explore where no man has gone before. An adventure that quickly turns into one action packed fight for survival as the crew face a deadly foe name Krall played by the talented Idris Elba. Mixed into the action and emotion are some of the most beautiful visuals that special effects can deliver! From the amazing spaceship fight action scene to the action packed fight on the remote planet the crew find themselves stranded on, the special effects here are spectacular! Another honorable mention was that of new comer to the Star Trek franchise Sofia Boutella as the fierce warrior Jaylah, who added a touch of some kung fu ass kicking to the action. This film had it all, with lots of nods to previous Trek movies and TV shows, they just really made this one special. If your a Star Trek fan or not, this film will keep you entertained. If your a hard core Trekkie who feels it has strayed from the original series, I don’t know what to tell you, this is summer blockbuster fun at its best!
