Malignant meaning: To be full of hate/ to be evil-intentioned. But I would argue that “Monophobia” or “Misunderstood” would have made a better title. Now I can’t get into the why’s and why not’s, nor can I explain why those are better titles, without getting into spoilers. But this movie is not what the trailer makes it seem to be. It’s understandable why that is though, after all this movie has a huge  reveal in it’s 3rd act, and it’s better to mislead the audience then to spoil the movie. So I will tiptoe around certain aspects of the film as I give you my thoughts.

This movie seems like a modern day b-movie who embraces the idea of being a b-movie (or does it). Malignant falls to most horror tropes ever seen in horror movies but it does have an original story and while it delivers cliché after cliché it also delivers a unique take on the genre. I found myself smiling, and sometimes laughing, as the film reveals it’s “twist”. A twist that I found interesting and I felt might have worked had it not been for some bad acting and just eye rolling moments. The jump scares it does have in the beginning completely ware off by the end and it loses any creepy tone it might of had. This might become one of those b-movie cult classics years from now, we’ll have to wait and see, but for now it’s just one of those video rentals from back in the day that has a crazy good horror cover yet the movie turns out to be a complete cheese fest!
